Since you have previously read about lenses in the start of this article, you need two basic lenses to kickoff your career. The first one would have to be a telephoto lens. This kind of lens will enable you to take close-ups and zoomed in photos that can be taken from quite a distance. This is handy for instances wherein you need to take them but you can’t exactly be quite near them. The second lens will have to be a wide angle lens. You need a camera bag that will let you bring everything all in one go without too much hassle. Lastly, you need something that will let you edit the photos or touch them up professionally. You need a good and working laptop or computer of sorts to install them in as well. You will need an assortment of lenses for you to be able to take a variety of shots. Now lenses can be really quite expensive and you can’t just up and leave and go buy everything you possibly can especially when you’re just starting out. You only need two basic lenses to start off, though. You need a macro lens for your portrait shots and for all of the close-ups that you will be taking. You will also need a wide angle lens that will get to take care of your group photos for you. This will also be able to capture wide horizon and panoramic shots quite beautifully for you.
You will need a high quality camera bag to protect your gear. Your gear is your most important investment as a wedding photographer and something that you should protect at all costs. Invest in the best camera bag the market can offer. Go for something really padded and sturdy that can stand a beating and the test of time. Wedding photographers move around a lot and that means that your equipment would need to move around with you as well. You need to give your gear the right kind of support and cushion.
Photo editing software
You will need photo editing software for touching up the photos post shoot. Photos are no good post shoot until they have been fully scrutinized and touched up in such a way where you are able to fix any possible issues with the images. Invest in great photo editing software and learn how to use it and this should see you through the entire process of post production.
Don’t be afraid to talk to the people you photograph
Most people usually have the notion that photographers should just be silent workers clicking away in the background and not really saying anything to the people being photographed. If you want a more authentic vibe coming from your wedding photography stint though, you should be doing the opposite (although not all the time, just be sure to balance it out at some point). Seriously, just talk to them like you normally would to other people when you’re not behind the camera. Be friendly and polite and try to entertain them and keep them interested and “in the moment” as much as possible.

Take the time to really pose her properly and make sure that she comes out looking beautiful in her photos. Show her how to pose herself and let her know what her best angles are. Learn how to compliment women in between takes
Women love being complimented. Learn how to play on this little tidbit of knowledge and you’ll be able to take authentic looking pictures or women smiling, blushing, and just looking all feminine and nice. There is something inexplicable that happens when people in general get complimented genuinely.
Let people be themselves and encourage them to have fun during photo shoots
Wedding photography does not have to be tedious and boring. A little personality never hurt anybody. Let them have fun. Tell them it’s OK to laugh and be a little silly at times. Crack jokes on the side and encourage a light vibe all throughout the photo shoot session. This will make things so much easier both for you and for the people that you are taking pictures of. Personality brings forth the wonderful differences that add character and spirit to wedding photos and they should not be suppressed in any way.
Bring in a team to help you out, you just can’t do it all alone

Invest in gear that is good enough to shoot high quality wedding videos
Wedding videos that have great quality require great gear as well in the process. This is just something that you cannot, at any point in time, be cheap about. Remember that this is a business investment, above all else. In order for you to be able to deliver high quality products, you need high quality equipment to be able to get the job done. It just comes with the territory and is something that you should be willing to do.
Make sure that your backup gear is covered and ready to go anytime
Your backup gear will save you in the event that something bad happens to your main gear. You need to have an alternate set of equipment that will more or less be able to cover you for when your main one conks out on you. You do not have the luxury of stopping mid-event just because your camera broke. You should be able to cover all the contingencies and mitigate all the risks out there as much as possible.
Invest in a stable tripod that is at least five feet tall
A tripod is your best defense against a blurry and shaky video and should be a pre-requisite when it comes to all of your shoots. Filming without it will make your wedding video come off looking amateur and just badly taken. This doesn’t cost a lot either so it really is an investment worth taking.
Figure out a theme or a plot that you would like to go with for your video
A video that is just a mere stream of clippings that do not make sense altogether is pointless and unprofessional. Try to figure out what kind of theme you are going for and come up with a story board for it.
Have a nice and long meeting with the bride and groom to really talk things out before you start to do anything just yet. Managing expectations should be the very first task that you need to be able to cross off of your list so make sure that this is something that you do first and foremost. 1. Get some kind of experience first before even thinking about getting any clients to cover.
If you have not covered any kind of wedding before, don’t even think of doing it now; at least not until you are able to get some kind of experience. Wedding photography is more complicated and requires more hours and level of expertise compared to other legs of photography whose shoot periods may just last about 1-2 hours in a studio setting. Wedding photography is nothing like that. Do yourself a favor and offer to assist a more established a pro photographer first before even thinking about booking any clients. Experience is the best teacher and that is more applicable than ever especially when it comes to this particular field.
2. Prepare your gear ahead of time.
Wedding photography is not the easiest niche to get into and neither is it the cheapest. The thing is cameras, especially the high quality ones, really take a lot of money and can seriously burn a hole in your finances. Save up for enough money to get a high quality DSLR camera. You can start with the more basic 5D or the upgraded 1-Series, whatever fits your budget, really. But you have to prepare for that and for a secondary one of similar quality. The second camera will be your backup for when something happens to your main camera. It’s just smart planning.
3. Have a heart to heart talk with your clients and go over all of the options in detail.
Your clients are your prime priorities. You have to know what they want and how they want it done. Have an open discussion with them and go back and forth in brainstorming and sharing ideas and inputs about the things that are possible for you to deliver and the things that are not. Be honest and firm but still polite when you come across some hurdles as you most likely will when it comes to some topics such as pricing and turnaround time. Diplomacy is your best friend here so hone your skills properly.
4. Get someone to assist you by all means.
You can’t cover a wedding all alone. Wedding photography is too complex for that. You can pay an assistant to assist you in all your gigs or just get a friend to help you while you’re still starting out. Whatever works for you should be fine.
5. Attend some classes to help you get better at your craft
Formal training never hurt anybody. Getting some kind of advancement in your field in the form of academics is a great idea to start off with especially if this is something that you would like to really delve into on a more professional playing field. Plus, certifications look pretty in your resume if you want to apply for any photography jobs in the future.
6. Get your legalities covered by having an iron clad contract set in place.
A contract that mitigates your risks and gets your liabilities covered is an absolute must. Get it reviewed by a lawyer just to make sure you don’t come across any kinds of loopholes whatsoever.
